Hi faithful readers!
I’m considering doing an every-other-month book club via my website and Facebook author page. Is this something you would be interested in?
I’ve always wanted to be part of a book club, but I’ve never had the joy of having local readers with similar tastes. I thought it would be great to get together with others who like reading Christian Historical Romance (like you!) and have our own online book club. I’m still trying to sort the idea out, but before I put too much effort into it, I wanted to have your feedback.
My current thought is to vote on a Christian Historical Romance novel, pick a day where we come together via Zoom (or just posts online) to discuss the book, play a game or two, and participate in a giveaway. I’d send discussion questions ahead of time because if you are like me, you need time to think and process. It would be an event you sign up for ahead of time and wouldn’t necessarily have to participate every time.
If I did it, I think the schedule would be January, March, May, July, September, and early November (to avoid holiday hassles).
The first one would be pretty short notice for this July, but the book options I’m thinking are:
- The Lost Lieutenant by Erica Vetsch – Regency
- A Name Unknown by Roseanna M. White – WWI
- Veiled in Smoke by Jocelyn Green – The Great Chicago Fire
If this is something you are interested in, please comment below. Let me know what book would be your top choice and any suggestions you might have.

Hi Crystal! This book club sounds super and I’ve always wanted to be a part of this kind of club but my hearing handicap hindered me from joining. How would this work online? I do not have Zoom, in fact, what is it?
I am not familiar with these books listed, but if I can find one in the library, then I can read up on it. I can’t keep buying books! Veiled in smoke sounds interesting based on the fire in Chicago where I was born.
I do not subscribe to Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest. These take up too much time and effort to keep up. I rely on email and I prefer this mode of communication.
Let me know how this goes!
So Zoom is a video chat program, but it does not have closed captioning. So I am not sure it would work for you. I’m not aware of any email based book club groups. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to manage one like that. I wish I could direct you so something, but all of those books are worth picking up from your library if you can. Facebook is great for the online reading clubs because questions and answers are all typed. However, I understand how overwhelming that can all be. Praying you will still find enjoyment in the books you are able to find at the library. I don’t mind to talk via email with just you, but managing a whole group of emails would be too much. Let me know if you are able to pick one up.
I lost the list of the three books that you mentioned. Could you please repeat that so I can look it up in my library?
Thank you, Crystal.
I found the list. I looked those up in my library, and none of them are in the catalog. Sorry.
I’m sorry they are not available at this time. Maybe you could request they order a copy once they open back up. Hugs.
I would be totally interested! Would you ever do any biblical fiction since that is historical too? Those are my favorites!
Absolutely! I’d love for other in the group to recommend the books we vote on. The next round could be all choices from Biblical fiction. I think it’s the best way for us all to be introduced to new authors. Would you fill out this Google form so I can contact you when we get this set up? https://forms.gle/a2MyEyzt4aTa1DqQ7
I just wanted to let you know that this is such a fun idea!! I, unfortunately, won’t be able to participate right now, but would love to in the future ((if it’s something you’re still doing)).
Absolutely, and you can join the group and just join when you can. I know schedules really make things hard. That and having littles. 😉
Hi, I think an online book club would be great. I have tried other in person book clubs but their taste and interest were never the same as mine. I think zoom or even a FB group would work well or maybe both.
Veiled in smoke I think would be a good one.
Thanks,

I will have to think through how to do the FB aspect a little, but I agree, both might be ideal. I think for our July meeting (since it seems like it might be a go) will do Zoom only to give me time to figure it all out. If you want to participate fill out this Google form so I can get all the details hammered out and communicated. The reason I wanted to start the book club is exactly for the reason you communicated. I hope this will fill in a need. https://forms.gle/XprSHPME3NRwsrqaA
Hi maybe have a FB group that only members can join. You can communicate with members that way about book selection, zoom meetings etc. but use zoom for actual meetings. So excited. Thank you!
Yay! Thanks for the great suggestion. I sent the link to the group in an email. 🙂 It looks like Veiled in Smoke is the winner for July.
