Reading Challenge 2026: Tackle the TBR Pile

This Month: July – Patriotic Theme, time period, occupation Next Month: August – Classic book
In Books and Battlefields by Heather Tabers is a homefront WWI historical romance with a light love-triangle trope. I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, so I was one of those evil readers who peeked at the end of the book to see who I should be rooting for. I really needn’t have though. It was obvious pretty early on who the love interest really was, as Isabella Pearce did not vacillate between the two as a love interest. Both men were likeable, but as a reader, there was only one hero that stood out as worthy of Isabella–at least FOR Isabella. The man who ended up having to walk away will have his own worthy love story in the next book, I’m sure. He was a good man, just not the best fit for Isabella. Aside from the romance, I enjoyed reading Isabella Pearson’s story as she stretched her wings and overcame the scars inflicted by her past. It was interesting to learn about the WWI hospital camp in Alabama, the librarian volunteer service, and the other historical details of this period that are often overlooked. Overall, I recommend this book to other historical romance fans, even those who may not be fans of love triangles.

In Books & Battlefields by Heather Tabers

Genre: Historical Romance, WWI

A spirited librarian with a guarded heart. A haunted surgeon battling the past. A quiet deputy who never stopped hoping.

Isabella Pearson isn’t looking for love—only a way to serve. In 1917, she leaves her privileged Denver life behind to volunteer as a librarian at Camp Sheridan, Alabama. With a suitcase full of books and a heart determined to remain independent, she never expects to find herself being pursued by two men: Nathaniel, her brother’s steadfast best friend, and Byron, the brooding Chief Medical Officer who makes her pulse race for all the wrong reasons. Major Byron McDaniel has buried his heart with his late wife and plans to keep it that way. Yet Isabella’s courage and compassion rattle the walls he’s so carefully built. Meanwhile, Nathaniel Steele has followed Isabella to Alabama with hopes of finally winning the heart he’s long treasured in silence. But as tensions rise at Camp Sheridan—with a suspicious fire, a string of accidents, and whispers of sabotage—Isabella must navigate more than just her feelings. When loyalty, love, and liberty hang in the balance, will she trust her heart—or her instincts? Purchase Links: Amazon
